The Night the Basement Almost Flooded

It was one of those nights where the rain just wouldn’t stop. The kind where you hear it pounding against the windows, the gutters overflowing, and the wind howling like it’s trying to warn you about something. I was curled up on the couch with a good book, trying to ignore the storm outside when suddenly, the lights flickered. A second later, the entire house went dark.

My heart skipped a beat. The power was out. I could still hear the relentless rain outside, and that’s when my thoughts turned to the basement. With the electricity out, the sump pump wouldn’t be running. I put down the book and bolted downstairs, my heart pounding faster than the rain outside.

The basement was dry—so far. But I knew better than to trust appearances. I glanced over at the sump pump, my first line of defense against the rising water. It was quiet. Too quiet.

Later, when the power finally returned, I went downstairs to check the main pump. As the lights flickered back on, I heard the familiar hum of the pump starting up again. Everything seemed to be in perfect working order, just as Steve had predicted. The backup pump had done its job flawlessly, and now the main pump was ready to take over.

That night, as the rain finally let up and the house was bathed in the warm glow of electricity again, I knew the basement was secure, and so was everything in it. No matter how bad the storm or how long the power was out, my home was protected, and I had Steve to thank for it.
