Initially, I must confess, I was not a champion of reviews; they felt laborious, dull, and seemed to yield little value. Looking back, I realize the issue wasn’t the review itself, but rather, my approach and mindset towards them.

Platforms like Google have revolutionized how we give and receive reviews for products and services, but the unsung heroes are the reviews we conduct internally – employee assessments, supplier evaluations, and yes, even the occasional decision to guide a customer to a different service provider. Today, I want to underscore the transformative power of review as a best practice that extends beyond professional life and reverberates into our personal lives, our faith, and our financial goals.

Let’s take a step back and examine employee reviews. A common misconception is that they’re time-consuming and hamper productivity. However, my experience has taught me otherwise. I have integrated reviews into my business strategy and found them to be vital instruments for performance evaluation. They facilitate a structured dialogue between employees and management, enabling us to identify strengths and areas for improvement. The outcome? A resilient team that’s continually evolving, primed to tackle the ever-changing business landscape.

From an employee’s perspective, reviews are a launchpad for personal growth. When approached with maturity, these feedback sessions offer employees insights into their performance and areas for improvement. The periodic checks and balances that we apply to our faith are analogous to performance reviews at work. At times, I grapple with spiritual questions, reassessing my faith and my role in the grand scheme of things. By engaging in a form of ‘spiritual review’, I deepen my understanding of my beliefs, reaffirm my commitment, and identify areas of spiritual growth. When my faith is robust, I find myself more adaptable and resilient, all thanks to regular spiritual check-ins.

Financial goals are another area where reviews are pivotal yet often overlooked. Regular financial health checks are as crucial as our business reviews. They offer a clear view of our spending habits, investment performance, and savings growth. Through this, my wife and I can assess our progress towards our financial goals, adjust our course as needed, and set new milestones. This disciplined approach offers us financial security and peace of mind, even though, I must admit, I sometimes find myself resisting these crucial check-ins!

Similarly, a personal life audit or review encapsulates various domains – health, relationships, personal growth, to name a few. These check-ins can stir feelings of discomfort due to the introspection they require. However, it’s this introspective journey, taken with self-compassion and grace, that triggers growth and fulfillment.

So, what’s the shared takeaway? Whether it’s an employee or personal review, an appraisal of our faith, or a financial assessment, all rely on the bedrock of evaluation, feedback, and improvement. They serve as mirrors, reflecting our current state and guiding our journey towards improvement, both personally and professionally.

As an employer, I’ve learned the importance of constructive feedback and the value it holds for my team. As a believer, regular reviews of my faith have fortified my spiritual commitment. As an individual, I’ve recognized the importance of periodic personal and financial check-ins to keep my life on track.
